The Plan

The route we are going to be taking to Ulaanbataar and back will take us across two continents and eight time zones. We will barely miss entering the tropics in Iran, and make it into the Arctic Circle in northern Scandinavia.

The route will inevitably change as we go along, as we find hitherto unknown places to explore, or when the roads run out and force us to rethink things, but this is the current plan.

Case in point; since I wrote the above paragraph a couple of weeks ago we have rethought our route to avoid Iran, due to visa complications. The route should now take us on a ferry across the Caspian, from Baku to Turkmenbashi. Who knows how things will change once we actually get on the road!

On the map below, the red line is our outward leg, and the blue line is our homeward stretch. Red and blue pins are places we aim to see en route, while yellow are ones that we’d like to see, but that don’t currently fit into our plans. The small orange men are border crossings.

To see how far we’ve made it, check out our updated map under “The Route”, above.
